White Woman In Gorilla Mask Throws Egg At Black Republican California Gubernatorial Candidate Larry Elder

A white woman wearing a gorilla mask was seen throwing eggs at California recall gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder on Wednesday as he toured a homeless encampment in Venice.

Elder is campaigning to be the first black governor of the state.

In video of the incident, a member of Elder’s security team tried to push the woman away as she yelled expletives at him and dared him to touch her again.

She then tried to hit the man in the face, which prompted other members of Elder’s security team to jump in. Another woman in the crowd was seen hitting another member of the team in the face.

Many commenters noted that the woman wearing a gorilla mask while attacking a black man could be construed as racist.

Poised To Make History

Elder said later on Wednesday the egg throwing was not the end of the attack. The security team was also “shot with a pellet gun and hit with other projectiles.

Defiant, Elder also said that, “the intolerant left will not stop us.”

Elder tweeted out a statement addressing the attack Wednesday night: “Today I kicked off the Recall Express bus tour. Before we even left Los Angeles, my security detail was physically assaulted, shot with a pellet gun, and hit with projectiles. The intolerant left will not stop us. We will recall Gavin Newsom. We will save California.”

Elder, a Los Angeles native, announced his run for governor in July.

If elected, Larry Elder would become the first black governor of California.

Racially Motivated Attack?

Many of Elder’s supporters are saying that because the woman throwing the eggs and wearing the gorilla mask was white, this was an obvious racial attack.

And many of those same supporters are calling out the silence of Democrats for not condemning the attack.

Matt Gorman, for communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee, pointed out the double standards:

Michigan congressional candidate Travis Wines lamented that there would most likely be no consequences for the attackers,

Political columnist Benny Johnson compared the scene to some of the ugly, iconic photos of the Civil Rights era:

Latest Polling Data

Gavin Newsom has garnered much Republican ire in California due to high taxes, out of control real estate prices, a growing homeless problem, and environmental issues such as forest management to control wildfires.

But perhaps no factor has been greater than his stringent COVID-19 restrictions.

He also did not help his cause when he was seen dining at the pricey “French Laundry” restaurant last fall and not practicing any of the COVID restrictions he had saddled his fellow Californians with.

There were also claims that Newsom’s kids returned to the classroom last fall while most California schools remained closed. Newsom claimed the return was partially in-person and part virtual.

Polling data has gone back and forth over the summer. In July and August, polls showed that Californians were split on the question of whether to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom.

As election day gets closer, polling has shown support growing to keep Newsom on as Governor.

California has not had a Republican Governor since Democrat Gray Davis was recalled in 2003 and replaced by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The latest poll numbers are trending toward Newsom. A Change Research poll showed Californians voting down the recall 57% to 42%. SurveyUSA and Trafalgar Group both showed just over 50% of voters not in favor of the recall. The Public Policy Institute of California poll showed 58% not in favor of the recall.

Election Day in California is September 14.
